School gets out for the summer this week! Wahoo!!!!
Bring on the lazy-hazy-crazy days of summer! Can you name the song?
I love this time of year. Less obligations, more fun, and creative ways to encourage growth and development with my little ones without feeling obligated to have “school time”.
One tradition that I started with my boys several years ago is having summer reading charts. For every book that they read, they could put a sticker on their chart. The chart consisted of 100 spaces, which equals 100 books they needed to read. May seem a little daunting but with the entire summer to accomplish it and $10 dollars in their pocket after they did, they always finish.
With inflation going up, I may up it to $15. ๐
Other great ideas for incentives would be to give special prizes after they read a certain amount of books or perhaps plan a special outing or trip when they finish the chart. Whatever encourages your child to read is a GREAT idea!
To Their Skill Level
The rules evolve according to their skill level each year. So now that they are older, they can’t get away with reading easy books to quickly fill in each space. They definitely would if they could!
It’s chapter books for my big boys! My mother introduced me to these books and my eight year old is loving them! Such a great way to introduce several great classic works to young children.
For every chapter they read out of their chapter book of choice, it will count as one square. They are also allowed to read more lengthy storybooks (like Berenstain Bear Books) to their younger siblings and have it count as a square.
Seeing my boys read to each other is always such a sweet site and I encourage it whenever I can!
I have used a basic 100 square counting chart every summer, but haven’t been able to find the link. With school getting out this week and the boys asking about when they can start their summer reading, there was definitely the need to make my own summer reading chart for us to use.
I’m so pleased with how the chart turned out! It is super cute and is a lot more fun to fill out than the plain old black and white chart we had used in the past. So hopefully it will get the boys even more hyped up for reading. I know pretty things always get me more excited! How about you?
