This smoothie brings me back to my childhood. I remember my mother whipping up this smoothie for my siblings and me when we were young. It was one of our favorite lunch/snack options. We actually grew up calling it “Fruit Drink”, original name, I know. But funny enough, lots of our friends could never remember the name and just referred to it as that “really good drink your mom makes”.
We have a variety of smoothies we blend up at our house. But my boys have their own special name for this one. When they want me to make this protein filled fruit smoothie, they ask,
“Mama, can you make the best smoothie?”
Little did I know or appreciate when I was younger that this tasty drink is actually packed full of protein. My mother, who is a midwife, created this smoothie for a healthy snack option for her pregnant ladies to ensure they were getting enough protein.
We just drank it because it was delicious!
Protein Packed Fruit Smoothie
The secret elements for this protein boost are the two ingredients of whole Greek yogurt and cottage cheese. Some may grimace at the thought of cottage cheese (like my Dad) however cottage cheese is a protein powerhouse and is loaded with nutrients and boasts of 12 grams of protein in just one 1/2 cup. And honestly, you can’t taste the texture after it is blended up (our favorite blender).
Whole Greek yogurt is also full of healthy goodness with 14 grams of protein in a 1/2 cup. But make sure it is WHOLE yogurt without any added sugar, because the protein numbers drop drastically if it is not, like to a measly 2-3 grams and it also is full of added unnatural sugars and unnecessary calories. Yuck!
To give it a little extra boost of sweetness (that us kids enjoyed!), my mom added 100% pure maple syrup.
Yum, yum!
So for all my childhood friends that have come back asking for my mother’s famous “fruit drink”, here you go! 🙂
As far as the recipe goes…
We usually always have cut up pineapple on hand but never buy pineapple juice. So I substitute the juice for the whole pineapple pieces and it turns out just fine.
The frozen strawberries help give the smoothie a thicker consistency. So replacing fresh with frozen strawberries wouldn’t give it the same delicious texture.
