My little man Boston turned three years old. For his birthday party, I originally planned to go all out in decorating. He is enthralled with trains, cars, trucks, tractors, basically anything with wheels, so I was envisioning a train themed birthday party with all of the trimmings (train crossing signs, taping the floor to look like a railroad, train themed games… you get the idea). As his special day drew nigh, I asked him if he wanted cake and ice-cream for his birthday. Surprisingly he said no. I asked him what treat he wanted and he replied emphatically “DONUTS!”
It was then I took a step back and admitted, you know what? He really could care less about all the party decorations at this age, perhaps in a year or two, so why go to all the hassle when all he really wants is donuts?!? Do you ever find yourself rushing way overboard when there really is no need? Well I decided not to this time, especially since we have seven more parties to throw. I resolved to stick with donuts and since it was a birthday party, why not make it a donut cake?! (o:
He has a thing for donuts. Actually funny story, the first time we let him walk alongside the grocery cart instead of sitting inside it, he managed to grab a box of chocolate donuts while we were bagging our produce. This was before he could talk but he did not have any trouble communicating to us that he wanted those donuts. The crazy thing is he had never had a donut and it is not like we regularly buy them or have ever bought any while we were with him. I guess he has some innate fetish for donuts.
To say he was excited for his donut cake would probably be an understatement. He was VERY excited for his donut cake. At church, his nursery leader discovered it was his birthday and said “Boston it’s your birthday!” and he looked straight at her and very seriously exclaimed “DONUT CAKE!” He had a similar reply to anyone who mentioned the word birthday.
So we kept his birthday party simple, but with the essentials:
– Blew up a few balloons
– Hung a ‘Happy Birthday’ sign
– Constructed a donut cake
– Invited a few friends
– Ate donuts from a string
(Yes, yes I know each donut is supposed to be hung from their own individual strings, I totally spaced that concept when we were stringing them and all the time I wondered why it didn’t look right.) (o:
– And opened presents
You might have noticed some Christmas themed wrapping paper. Yes, we are those parents that save a few Christmas presents to give to their son on his birthday. You see we have four sets of neighbors that spoil him like grandparents. So he was not in want of presents.
Short pause while we take a look at my other little man. My baby love. Oh yea, he’s styling.
All in all I would say it was a pretty successful party!!!
And there you have it. A lightly decorated birthday party but just what my son wanted.
So will you be requesting a donut cake for your next birthday? (o:

Rachel attended a party recently where all the donuts were on one string. So it probably doesn’t matter too much as long as the concept is the same. It looks like little man had a great time and that’s all that matters, right? Great job!

Yep, and he did have a great time! Thanks Jaime! ๐
