Simple 5-step tutorial on how to fold a baby washcloth hippo. Post may contain affiliate links.
How about a washcloth hippo for your next baby gift? Here is a simple tutorial on how to fold a baby washcloth hippo that I created for y’all. Three of my friends have had baby showers in the last month, so my mind has gone back into baby mode and I thought the washcloth elephant I made could use a friend. It took me awhile to figure out how to go about making a hippo and I didn’t think I would be able to do it, but as soon as my toddler distinguished that what I held in my hands was a hippo, I knew I was on the right track!
Let’s get started!
Supplied Needed:
Step 1:
Lay your 1st washcloth flat, then fold both sides equally into the middle leaving a little space. Roll both ends into the center. Bend upwards and secure with a rubber band. The rubber bands help keep the shape since the washcloths are so small.
Step 2:
Grab your 2nd washcloth and fold it diagonally in half. Take a corner end and slip it through your already folded washcloth from step one which creates the tail. Lay your 2nd washcloth flat with the washcloth feet up. Take the top corner of the 2nd washcloth and insert it between the feet underneath the rubber band. Fold the right side over and then the left.
Step 3:
Roll the left side and then the ride side towards the middle. Gather the end and bring forward in a rolling fashion. Secure with rubber band. You may want to do a little forming to get the nose how you would like.
Step 4:
Pinch a small section where you would like an ear and secure with a rubber band. Create another ear on the other side.
Step 5:
To form the feet, push finger in between the two rolls (feet) and then squeeze the sides together. And there you have it, a washcloth hippopotamus! He may have a hard time standing up by himself, so just add a pebble or something of the sort in his behind and he will stand up just fine. Now go make him a friend. ๐

These are too cute! I will have to try to make some for my sister who just had a little girl.
What kind of rubber bands are you using? Like the smaller braid ones or larger ones? Thanks!

Hi Andrea! I just used the smaller clear elastic rubber bands- you get them in the hair section. Enjoy! ๐

I have a bit of a hippo obsession and have my bathroom decorated with them. I think it’s time to buy some new washcloths just to add a few more hippos. I’ll have to have a few extra rubber bands too since my daughter will likely insist on taking at least one in the tub. I’m passing down my love of these magnificent creatures.

I never thought of making them a permanent feature in my house, but this definitely works! Oh… to have a safari themed bathroom and then have a basket of lots of different washcloths animals would be so cute! Thanks for saying hi Jackie and thanks for sharing these with your daughter. ๐
