Baby it’s cold outside! Which means it is time for hot chocolate!
For the past few years, I have enjoyed creating a hot cocoa bar for our annual Caroling Party. To keep things interesting, I like to switch up my hot chocolate bar in regards to decor and toppings.
Since charcuterie boards are all the rage right now, I decided to create a hot cocoa topping board. After mapping out my hot cocoa charcuterie board, it seemed to be lacking. It was missing a bit of needed diversity and dimension.
Hot Chocolate Stir Sticks were the Answer!
I came to the conclusion that that a few hot chocolate stir sticks would be the perfect finishing touch to my cocoa toppings spread.

They added nice dimension and color, don’t you think?
I hadn’t originally intended on making them myself. The plan had been to just pick them up from a store. But after seeing how pricey they can be, I thought it best I figure out how to make them myself.
And guess what? Hot chocolate stir sticks are SOOOO easy to make!
How to Make Hot Chocolate Stir Sticks
All you basically need are some sticks and chocolate, then you can customize to your heart’s content!
Really the sky is the limit to whatever you want to coat your chocolate stirrers in. You could layer them with caramel bits, mini m’ms or Andes mints, or festive sprinkles. Whatever sounds delicious in a cup of hot cocoa is definitely a good option!
Ingredients:
- chocolate chips
- white chocolate chips
- mini dehydrated marshmallows
- crushed candy canes
- wood stir sticks
- parchment paper
Many would suggest using chocolate bark for this. It has added wax in it to help the chocolate set up better.
Well they can keep their wax. That chocolate is NASTY! I have found that I can get along just fine with regular baking chips, so that’s what I use and I usually have it on hand so that helps too!
A side note on the crushed candy canes, you can purchase them already crushed but I find that more expensive and I already usually have whole candy canes on hand (it is Christmas time!).
So to crush the candy canes, I unwrap them, place them in a ziplock bag, and seal it shut. Then I take a potato masher and crush the candy canes into the desired size.
Directions:
Start off by melting your chocolate. I put mine in the microwave on high for about a minute. Then pulled it out, stirred it and microwaved it some more until the chocolate was completely melted.
Then I dipped the sticks one by one in the melted chocolate and placed it on parchment paper.
By the time I was finished, the first sticks I had coated in chocolate were firm so I dipped them again for a second coating and then covered them with the crushed peppermint or marshmallows and placed them on the parchment paper.
After finishing the white chocolate stir sticks, I started the same process over again this time melting the milk chocolate chips.
After they were all complete, I stored the sticks in an airtight container until it was time for our caroling party.
And boy were they a hit! There were even some nibbling on the sticks without a cup of cocoa in their hands.
Hey, no judgment here! 🙂

I found the best way to crush the candy canes is to use my Pampered Chef food chopper, it does a great job.
