My husband is a big sports fan.
Me?
Well, not so much.
Don’t misunderstand, I really enjoy sports, even football. Heck, I played powder puff when I was in high school. I’m just not a big fan of sitting in front of a television to watch it for what seems like hours upon end.
One year, some of our good friends invited us, along with several close friends, to their house on a Sunday for a potluck. This was not out of the ordinary, as we have had gatherings like this in the past. Clueless of even what month the Super Bowl is in every year, I failed to put the pieces together that they scheduled the event on the second Sunday in February.
We had a wonderful meal together and afterwards us gals congregated together to talk in the kitchen while the men gathered in a neighboring room. I didn’t find out until halfway through our stay that this really was a Super Bowl party! I hadn’t been told about it (on purpose mind you) because they all knew I wasn’t a fan.
Perfect Game for Game Day
Well, I tell you what, if they had thrown in a few rounds of football bingo, I would have been all in! This game is a great activity to play during the game that everyone will enjoy. Even for those of us who aren’t the biggest fans, eh hem.
It’s also a great way to teach those who may not be as familiar with the game, what different calls and terms mean. Everyone will be watching the game to make sure they can cross off as many squares as possible so they can be the first one to yell BINGO!
Football Bingo Game Supplies
The supplies you’ll need to play football bingo are pretty basic and you most likely already have everything on hand which is great!
- Printable Football Bingo Game Cards (scroll down to the link to download them)
- White cardstock (to print the game cards on – regular paper will work too!)
- Scissors / paper cutter
- Bingo markers (Get creative with this! We like using Hershey kisses for our bingo game markers because they are the perfect size and are delicious! Another option, especially if your guests want to be moving around, is handing out pens or even football stickers to mark off spaces.)
- Prizes for the winner(s)!
If you want to reuse these for future games, a great option would be to laminate the bingo cards (these laminate sheets work great!) and give everyone the usual bingo markers or dry erase markers to cross off their spaces.
How to Play NFL Football Bingo
If you have ever played a regular round of bingo, than this will be pretty straightforward.
To play, first hand out a football bingo game card to everyone along with bingo markers. Explain that while they watch the big game, they will be playing bingo. Whenever they hear or see one of the items listed on one of their bingo squares, like “Offsides” or “Field Goal” they will put a candy or mark that space. First person to cross off five in a row, either horizontally, vertically, or diagonally, wins!
You could get more specific by telling everyone to only put their marker down if their football team has those things happen or called on them. Either way you play it, it’s a lot of fun! Especially for those that are just there for the socialization and not so much the football game itself. (Me… I’m referring to me.)
Different Ways to Play
How to play football bingo more than once? Great question! The simplest way would be to just have more than one winner, so whoever gets the next bingo. Or if you feel like mixing up your normal “five in a row round BINGO!” way of playing football bingo, consider these entertaining variations:
- Perimeter – Fill all the squares around the perimeter of the card.
- Blackout – Play until someone has their entire bingo card filled out.
- Swap out – In the middle of the game, have players swap seating with their neighbor which means they get their neighbor’s card! Or in between games, have the players swap cards with another player.
- Everyone wins – Bingo doesn’t have to finish after the first winner! Consider playing until everyone wins.
- Sweet markers – Jazz up the bingo cards by using candy/chocolate for bingo markers! Hershey kisses and Rolos are the perfect marker size.
