Ole! Simple DIY Cactus Pinata Banner that will add fun decor to your fiesta!
Are you big into Cinco De Mayo festivities?
Honestly, I never have been much into it but after throwing a Mexican Fiesta party, for our 9 parties in 9 weeks challenge, I think May 5th may be a popular day around our house. I love all the bright colors and festive music, don’t you!?
How to make a Cactus Pinata Banner
I remember the first time I ever saw a cactus. I was about five years old driving with my family to Arizona to visit our cousins. On this LLLLLOOOOONNNNNNG car ride of 20+ hours, I had but two wishes:
1) to sit in the font seat and
2) to have a turn holding our little dachshund dog.
Pretty simple requests right?
Sure if you are an only child but when you are the second youngest of six girls you can basically forget about it. They eventually did give me a chance for both… at 10 o’clock at night when no one else wanted either. Owell, at least I was the first one to see a cactus.
When brainstorming ideas and decorations for our Mexican Fiesta, I knew some type of pinata was needed essential to our party. I debated creating a pinata myself (there are lots of tutorial on creating your own like this one). But when I suggested the idea to my husband and he gave me an incredulous look, one that says:
“I’m going to pretend you didn’t just say that.”
I knew what his argument was going to be, “we’re already throwing a party a week for 9 weeks, couldn’t we just go buy one?” Sure we could but why when I could make one myself?! (Please don’t tell me I am alone in having such feelings…)
I finally opted out of the pinata purchase, largely due to the fact that the guests we invited didn’t have any children.
But…
I still wanted something with the pinata feel. I started playing around with cardboard (I am a big fan of the stuff as seen in our western party), with a pinata in mind and came up with these little cacti and envisioned how cute they would be all strung up together.
What I loved about this, on top of looking fun and festive, was the fact that it didn’t cost me anything but time. I had gone through my stash of tissue paper saved from past presents (you have such a stash, I’m sure. ๐ ) and put it to good use to make this festive cactus pinata banner.
Ya, this was the tedious part that I wasn’t a fan of. But that being said, at least you couldn’t mess it up, it’s not like the cuttings had to be perfect.
Doesn’t the cactus pinata banner add a nice touch to our food table?
The little pink flowers on the cactus were easy and quick to make, I simply gathered a little pink tissue paper, twisted it then taped it onto the back of the cardboard.
And here is my son practicing his Bandito face.

These are super cute- couldn’t you just fringe the tissue first (this way you can fold a bunch over and fringe it quicker) and then layer it on? It might be worth it- to save some tedious time ๐
