How I made a bird baby mobile…
Hi everyone!
So how it began was I purchased a 13 piece crib set off of Ebay that I really liked in preparation for our expected baby girl. It had a mobile that I could also buy but I didn’t like it. I looked around and almost settled on one, but my husband encouraged me to make a mobile that matched the set.
I took the jungle themed mobile I had used for my son and stripped it to its bare bones. I used its covers as patterns for new covers that matched my new crib set. I bought fabric that matched and sewed the cover for the stem of the mobile and the little branches that the animals hanged from, that was the easy part.
I knew I wanted to have birds and owls hanging from the mobile, I was originally thinking two and two, but I needed to find a crochet pattern that worked size wise. I found a bird pattern while scrolling through Pinterest and made a practice bird with some old yarn. I only really liked the body of the pattern I found so I experimented with heart wings and made up a pattern for feet, beak, and eyes. I did the same for the owl.
Unfortunately the owl was a lot bigger than the bird so I adjusted my design to have the owl in the middle with four birds on the outside.
I took the crib blanket to Joanns and later to Hobby Lobby to find the yarn that matched. At first I did four different colored birds two of which were directly from the crib set and two that just matched. The difficulty was getting the birds to weigh the same so that the mobile was level. I just eyed it but it would have been a lot easier had I weighed the stuffing before putting it in because one bird was too heavy. It ended up alright though because I decided against the four different and instead made two more that matched the two from the crib set.
Due to being very detail oriented I became extremely picky with this mobile to get it just right. I spent over an hour making the top pink flower on the mobile. I braided yarn and sewed it by hand and then attached it to the flower to get the white swirls that matched the flower from the actual set. I did the same thing with the owl’s belly so it matched.
Thanks to Pinterest, I found a flower pattern as well as a leaf pattern I liked. I ended up getting more yarn at the store and changing the pink shade I was using to a more magenta to match the crib set. The birds and owls each are hanging from braided yarn. I sewed the flowers by hand to the yarn. The center flower cover I just sewed by hand. This mobile took me around a month to make, I easily spent over 12 hours making it. But I love the result!
This is me again- Didn’t I tell you she was AMAZING?! That is what I call custom made. It fits perfectly!

That is so cute! Baby is lucky to have a mommy who can make fun stuff. I’m with you on not being good at that kind of stuff. I tried to take up knitting one winter, but I knit so tight I could barely get my needles in the stitches and it made my hands hurt. I keep thinking someday I might wake up and magically be able to do that kind of stuff. In the mean time I’ll stay in the kitchen ๐
