Spice up your life by throwing 9 parties in 9 weeks! Your life will seriously be forever changed after doing so!
I heart parties. I enjoy brainstorming the ideas, preparing the details, creating and finding the decorations, and hosting the event. It really is a team effort, as my husband is right there by my side the whole way (he actually just spent his Saturday afternoon making a prop for a party).
When people ask us what we do for fun as a couple, we reply “Throw Parties. ”
Why I Like Parties
Parties give people something to look forward to and frankly, I think we need to have more parties, especially those of us that have children. By the time work is done, the dishes are washed, the house is picked up, and the kids are in bed, and it is time to enjoy some free time with your spouse, what do we do? Admit it… you turn on netflix.
Hey I also like a good movie but a little interactive fun once and awhile is nice too. We occasionally have a last minute game night with friends, but nothing beats a planned out activity.
It’s something to look forward to, to dress up for, to get giddy about! The giddiness and excitement you used to have when you were a kid for the simple fun things… that is what I miss in the daily hum drum of life.
Instead of “working hard and playing hard,” we indeed work hard but we… well, play lazy.
I guess we are too tired to plan anything, or the cost of the baby sitter… I don’t know, I feel like after you have children, the carefree simple things are over. Its just life. Is this ringing a bell for anyone else? We as adults need more planned fun and that is why I like to throw parties.
The Challenge: 9 Parties in 9 Weeks
Sound crazy? Well it probably is. What could have inspired this harebrained scheme? It all happened over a game of catch back in October. My husband and I were throwing a baseball back and forth and I brought up the subject of my blog, seeking for a bit of inspiration. Knowing my love for festive occasions, he suggested doing something for people to look forward to, like… throwing a party a day for a month.
Great idea…. uh but I think I might die! That is a little on the insane side especially since I have a baby and a toddler.
What about a party a week?
Oh… now there is some potential! A party a week for let’s say 9 weeks? Seeing how January is probably the dreariest time of the year (the hype of holidays have ended, the vacation days are over, and it is back to the daily grind), we decided to start this feat the first of the year. This would give people something to look forward to and hopefully help them get through the dismal months of winter.
With the number of parties we will be hosting, not all of them will receive the same amount of attention. After seeing some AMAZING parties that are pinned on Pinterest with the perfectly labeled food, beautiful decorations, and gorgeous homes, it has almost discouraged me from ever trying to even throw a party, especially hosting several back to back. What gets me out of this funk is remembering past parties we have thrown and the fun that everyone had. For example, our friends still bring up what a great time they had at our 1920’s party that we threw a few years ago. That makes me smile and is my goal for each event, for everyone to have a fabulous time.
What is a Party?
Well going straight to the dictionary: a PARTY (noun) can be:
I personally think that a party should have proper invitations and be sent out well in advance. An invite makes the event more formal and therefore takes it up a notch. I appreciate when I have sufficient time to make plans and prepare for the occasion, especially if dressing up is encouraged. Invitations lets your guest know, “Hey I am putting work and forethought into this so you better come because it is going to be FANTASTIC!” It doesn’t mean that elaborate cards need to be mailed, although some parties you may want to go down this route but with others a simple evite will do the trick and helps to cut costs.
Our 9 Parties in 9 weeks
We tried to steer away from the norm with a few of the parties to add some creativity to the mix. If ever you need to find a reason to host an event, simply check out the random holidays that occur every day… for example today is National Bird Day and Weigh-In Day.
Hopefully this experiment will help the months of January and February be a little brighter for ourselves and friends and we will learn a thing or two about throwing a good party. Anything I learn along the way, I will be sure to share!
Enough with the formalities…

This is a great idea! I can’t wait to see what you come up with. I’m always saying that we need to entertain more, but our excuses are miles long. Not sure if I could handle a party a week, but it’s a great challenge. Have fun!

I’m kind of an introvert, but I enjoy hospitality. What a great idea to challenge yourselves and spur creativity! So many people are afraid to invite others in, but I think it is what our homes are meant for! The main obstacle for me is getting things tidied up before people come. But I am determined to invite anyway!

I couldn’t agree with you more Julia! So …. are you planning a party?!?!? (o;

Sounds like fun! So as you seem to be the party guru I have a question for you…1)Do you invite the same people every time or switch it up? I have a hard time finding a balance between everyone I want to invite and how many can actually fit in my house. Just curious.
Aspen Jay says
Hi Jaime!!!! I am far from a party guru… we just threw a party tonight and we made a few rookie mistakes… owell. As far as the people go, we definitely try to switch it up. We have a few regular peeps, but even them we don’t invite to everything. Its fun to mix up the people to see the different crowd dynamics. (o:
